~ v formal 1 to bring an end to a violent situation especially when people are protesting (quell a riot/revolt/disturbance etc) (They needed more troops to quell the ever-rising tide of rioting.) 2 to reduce unpleasant feelings, especially of doubt or worry (I thought about the advantages of the deal, trying to quell a growing sense of unease.)
